Productive Sick Day

Today I decided the world wouldn't end if I took a sick day, so I did just that.  I was planning to work from home anyway, so it's not like I was even missed!  I then spent much of the day sleeping.  I've always found that, even for something as minor as this little cold, if I get plenty of sleep the first day I'm actually sick, I recover much more quickly.

The rest of the day, I played around with cascading style sheets and how well various browsers have implemented CSS 2.  Turns out that the little-known Opera browser has done the best job implementing both CSS 2 and html 4.0, with Internet Explorer just behind.  Netscape Navigator did such a poor job with style sheet implementation that one source refused even to rank them!  Of course, now that I want to link the reference, the link isn't working.  *shrug*  So it's left me wanting to download Opera, which will have to wait until my DSL comes back, because even though Opera is a teeny browser at 9 megs (that's including Java), it's still too big for 56k dialup.  Blar!  

Given my discoveries with Netscape, I made some changes to the website that should make it look a little better for Netscape users.  In the last few months of design and redesign of the site, I've given almost no consideration to Netscape since I get so few hits from Netscape users.  But the site really looked BAD using Netscape.  It still doesn't look as good as it does with I.E.  I'm curious to see how it looks under Opera.

Tomorrow, I'm going to play around some with the conceptual (and maybe part of the actual) design of a marketing website for our Economics and Policy Analysis within the larger organization (IHS Energy).  The IHS Energy website is just dreadful (last I checked, doesn't even use meta tags!), but it's even more dreadful that our group has no web presence at all.  I look at my efforts at serving three purposes:  1) obviously, it will promote our group and services, and 2) it will promote the individuals without our group when we come to our senses and decide to go elsewhere, 3) it lets me play with web design on company time, which is always a good thing!
