RK, CCR, CC

It is a small world.  I've been corresponding a bit with an RK fan in Amarillo who also happens to be a Counting Crows fan.  She turned me onto a band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, from Stillwater, who have a very Texas sound.  So I paid a visit to their website, which is beautifully done, and make some mention of this.  Turns out their webmaster is a friend of hers, and is an RK fan and a HUGE Crows fan (seems to know Lisa of AnnaBegins.com, our inspiration).  So now I've been corresponding with him a bit, and it turns out he also has the Willy Braun/Jay Nazz bootleg I mentioned yesterday, his copy is clean, and he's going to make one for us.  Very cool!

On the other hand, really good people like that whom I've run across through the 8 More Miles endeavor are balanced by the others who write wanting stuff: wanting us to send them our original bootleg recordings so they can make copies (yeah, RIGHT!), wanting us to copy them bootlegs (there's a FAQ on the site that addresses this -- but people write oblivious to the fact, which really endears them to me), wanting us to add a server just for our live shows (umm... anyone want to donate to the cause?  And maybe RK would like some say in the wholesale electronic distribution of THEIR shows?).  Those are some of the more ridiculous emails we have gotten from lurkers who have never bothered to: 1) send a fan review, 2) sign the guestbook, 3) participate in the forum, 4) participate in the e-group, 5) participate in Club Millican, or 6) otherwise participate in support of the band and/or site (chords, lyrics, photos, etc).  

I don't want to be an asshole about the bootlegs because I know people are interested in the band and really want to have cds of the live stuff (but not everyone has the equipment we have), but right now our priorities are: 1) to get all of the shows transferred from MD to WAV and to remaster them, 2) add somewhere from 4-8 new features to 8 More Miles, some of which are dependent upon #1 and none of which leaves much free time, 3) get bootleg cds cut for people who actually have helped us out with the site/have bootlegs to trade/other reasons.  We aren't doing the bootlegs for a profit (it's not our work to profit from), but for the personal enjoyment.  They are, however, a great addition to the website, and help to promote the band, and that's one reason we do them in addition to the personal pleasure we get from them.

Maybe it's time to suggest to the guys that they put out an "official" bootleg, much like the counting crows, which wouldn't need much processing or marketing and would be an easy moneymaker for them.  Hmm... now there's an idea.
