Health and Drinking

I got a lot accomplished today!  I slept in a bit, then went to the office and managed to check off everything I had on my to-do list for Friday.   I was pleased that there were no pressing emails or phone messages with regard to PEPS.  My colleague who is so worried about how I am handling PEPS support will just have to amuse herself by sticking her nose in someone else's business -- or perhaps even by doing her own job, which ought damn well to be enough to occupy her.

I find that in looking back over my journal entries for the Calgary trip that I see a steady progression from energetic and thoughtful to dead and ready to get home.  I suspect part of that is due to the social drinking.  Hallmark and I went out for beers after work virtually every day of the trip.  This is not something my body is used to.  It's rare for me to drink anything other than coffee during the week, and even the Friday night Icehouse gatherings are pretty mellow.  Hallmark is a regular "Have Several Drinks After Work To Relax" sort of person, and this is something I've never understood.  Generally, my mindset is such that I am MOST relaxed after work, and looking forward to working on my own projects rather than slowing my mind artificially.  It just doesn't seem to be very healthy behavior.  I suspect the last few days of journal entries from Calgary provide some evidence of this.

I'm still very tired from the trip, actually.  I may just sleep the night away and forgo the Icehouse tonight, especially with a storm brewing.

I'm looking forward to our discussion of the Kaplan book this weekend, although it seems that only three people have emailed me that they have read the book -- myself, John, and Hanah.  This is always a problem with discussion groups of any sort:  all manner of people think it sounds like a great idea until it requires an actual outlay of resources/time.  Then it falls by the wayside.  Perhaps future gatherings will have different results.  I suspect we need to start some sort of online discussion forum and give ourselves some sort of name to identify ourselves.  Maybe we need to come up with some sort of meeting schedule as well.  I hate to make things so formal, but sometimes that helps people who prefer things to be neatly and tightly planned and organized.  My own life is a statement of just the opposite.  :)
