Good Web
Design
Today, I previewed our new PEPS online webpage. It's ready to go -- just waiting for our IT people to get it hosted, which doesn't seem to be a priority. Unfortunately, it's as clumsy navigationally as ever, but it's very pleasing to the eye -- lots of nice java and graphics and such. I actually recommended to several people via email today that anyone in our company who is involved in web design or a web-based product would benefit from visiting Hanah's recent journal entry on the subject. She's written quite eloquently what I believe to be true about good web design (or, by analogy, good writing, or good anything). It's disappointing that the people in our group in charge of the web product have never actually marketed a website. I suspect had they done so our product would be something more along the lines of what Hanah talks about. I stopped giving input regarding the damn thing nine months ago when several of us offered constructive criticism that was casually dismissed. Basically, the people designing the thing wanted heaps of praise for their efforts regardless of any improvements that might be made, or indeed should be made -- back to that notion I mentioned in a previous entry that good enough is good enough, versus another notion of perfect, 100% of the time. In that situation, a conversation becomes pointless. Why waste precious time when the outcome has already been determined?
